Title: Old game lagged because of 3D sounds?

Neverwinter Nights is game from 2002. I played it many many times. But on new notebook, it was lagging like hell. I was surfing stuff and finally came to solution: I had to set from 3D sound to 2D.

I am just curious why was audio the reason for lags. Anybody had such problem? :D
