Title: It's so quiet in here...
Post by: Machine Medic on September 24, 2013, 04:52:57 AM
This place is starting to look deader than 1.1, and that's saying something since Lettered servers are quite seriously the only regularly active servers anymore.   :(

We need to throw a party in here or something, or I'm worried we'll start seeing cobwebs in the corners of the webpage, lol.  Reminds me, Halloween is coming up pretty soon... AAA should carve a granger or overmind pumpkin or something.   ;D

And now, a completely random and unneeded picture of my 250A arc welder, because there's absolutely nothing else to talk about at this point.

It would be nice to have a chat box on the website somewhere, so we can have lighter conversations in here.

That is of course provided that installing such a thing wouldn't take away from development of the game (if it's still being developed right now, for all we know it could be stalled out completely due to lack of funding).

Well, it's official....

1.1 is well and truly dead.   :(

Master.tremulous.net has been down for months, Tremfusion.net for almost a year.

ACR, KoRx, UBP, WrNTS, [STARBURST], and many others are now offline forever.  This project really is the only hope left.

I just made a trip to my favorite surplus store on my way home from work today...  ;D

Scored a 1.5kVA transformer that weighs 40lbs (20kg) for $20, and a 100 amp switch box for $30.

The transformer should be fun to play with... able to step up 120 to 192-208 at 0.75kW, or 240 to 385-414 at 1.5kW.

Since you seem to be interested in electronics, I thought I'd mention I noticed that this place (http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G19695) just listed some 2600 Farad capacitors for a pretty good price.

Didn't know anyone made single caps above 3kF yet... Arrays that large yes, but a single capacitor that large I've yet to see.

I suppose anything is possible if you put your mind and money in the same place.   ::)

Now when you brought this , I think i might overshoot with that number. I Have condensers that I've been using to make those:
And once there was like 9 condensers in one "closet" and 3 of those next to each other so maybe whole array overall had 5kF capacity, it was some time ago so i cant recall exactly.
I guess making single capacitor that big dont rly make sense when you can make array obviously.

That looks like a power-factor correction system.  Usually those have a few 100-1,000 uF, 300-600VAC electrolytic capacitors that are switched in and out as the building's power factor (http://www.crown.co.za/news/2013/August/power_factor_correction_in_a_nutshell.htm) changes throughout the day.

You might be getting confused by the fact that power factor capacitors like those are usually rated with the symbol kVAr, which is an expression of how much reactive power that capacitor can compensate for, rather than uF, which is an expression of how much charge that capacitor can store at a given voltage.

Conventional electrolytic capacitors can usually store between 1uF and 10,000uF at voltages between 10 and 1,000 volts.  Super capacitors are usually found with ratings from 1×10^6uF (1F) to 3×10^9uF (3kF) and are most always rated at 2.5V or 2.7V.

This page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_double-layer_capacitor#Concept) explains how super capacitors are different from electrolytic capacitors.

I've had photos from this device i were talking about but unfortunately some time ago i managed to brick my phone so photos are gone as well :/ .
Dont have time now but i will explain later why I had to use so huge condensers.

P.S.
I wonder if any1 else is actually reading this tread :p

ACR: Too far, 500 ping. KoRx: Lagged, 400 ping, and the US one is 300 ping, also lagged but that has been down for 3 years. UBP: Which one? Technically there are still UBP servers up. [STARBURST] was up a few weeks ago for an unknown reason, and I think I saw kdude there, or was someone else from the starburst community.

 - ACR: Ping at 90.
 - KoRX: Ping at 110.
 - The original clan-operated UBP: 80 ping.
 - Starburst: Ping at 50, but Clutch screwed up the QVM and killed the server years ago.  Starburst is now privately operated by Clutch, who was unanimously voted out of Contra clan by the leaders almost a year ago now.
 - WrNTS: Ping at 70.

The trick is to know where to look when you want something.  Online surplus stores like this (http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/) offer some excellent prices on certain things once in a while, and they usually take PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/what-is-paypal) (PayPal offers automatic currency conversion for a small percentage fee).

For example, they were selling 200 amp, 600 volt  cm200dy-12h (http://www.dzsc.com/uploadfile/company/49516/b20081024223642957.jpg) IGBT transistor modules for $3.95 a few months ago.  Needless to say they sold out in 36 hours, but the point is I look carefully and wait patiently for the cheapest opportunity for most of my equipment rather than spending all of my money at once.  The rest is just luck and having a minimum-wage highschool job.

Of course, there are certain things I have that I have had to cough up some signifigant change for, like my Owon SDS6062 (http://www.saelig.com/PSBEB100/PSBEB100005.htm) and my firefighting gear (http://www.trianglefireinc.com/Amerex-Carbon-Dioxide-Extinguisher-10-lb-p/330.htm), but I have to save up for months before all of such purchases.

My point is, just keep your eyes and ears open, you never know where or when you might find something cool for a good price, regardless of where you live.   ;)

I actually asked him if it would be possible to publish a new book to metro univerzum.. my book was called "Hanza Patrol" and it was about three friends in the Hanza faction, they were an outpost between Riga (Rižskaja) and Prospekt Mira. It was a parallel story to that of Artyom's. Unfortunately - HDD got cracked up lel.

It wasn't really finished, anyway I started my own novel "The Ranger", it's some sort of post-apocalyptic, but the story begins when the apocalypse does, so it has its great feeling. So far just in Slovak, and I don't feel really like some kind of artist writer. Some kind of romance story is going to be there too. I wonder if I can connect it to the Metro univerzum, so the main protagonist would decide to go to Moscow Metro first, before the nuclear holocaust. With his love ofc..

I've been getting ready to start a very large metalworking+electronics project lately, so I got some TIG welding practice in today after not having touched a welding stinger for about 6 months.

This is my resulting work on the left, compared to the rest of the class on the right:

And an unrelated project in Jewelry class... (long story short, I can't have two open hours, so I had to fill 6th period with an art credit, and another metalworking class seemed a lot better than listening to stuffy lectures about so-and-so artist or this-and-that sculptor).

Not bad weld indeed :P . I love welding and i love TIG because its so freaking easy comparing to classic SMAW arc welding.

During summer when i have some free time i usually go to the vacations in the forest in scout camp where i help them as technical support in exchange for free stay. There is always shitload of stuff to weld and they know i am good at this so very often i end up welding whole day xD . And i got to tell you i love it.
Last year they got TIG machine and i was just in love with this!

But tell me more about your large project :D

Except when you're welding aluminum (above), which is literally impossible without a foot control.  I imagine it's probably a fair bit easier with the more modern solid-state machines too, but all I've ever used is the school's old 8-ton Miller Dialarc saturable reactor:

As far as SMAW goes, that's just personal preference I guess.  I find that stick welding is exceptionally easier for me than MIG or TIG, but that might just be because I've had access to 225-amp welders and brand new rods.  It's a lot easier welding when you have as much power as you need, unlike with the cheap Craftsman or Harbor Freight 90-amp piles of absolute junk.  You *CANNOT* lay a good bead with most rods with less than 125 amps @ ~30V.

I don't have time to continue this post right now, but I will explain the project when I get back later today.
Title: Re: It's so quiet in here...
Post by: imp on February 06, 2014, 06:45:11 PM
That is interesting. As far as i can recall amps wasn't the problem since sometimes when i couldn't find angle grinder i were using welder to cut thru some plates which is legitimate technique but you need to have much amps for that.
But it could have been old rods. After all i cannot say that SMAW was unpleasant but for me MIG is very easy. You don't even have to care what you are doing , just weld your way thru the world :D
Title: Re: It's so quiet in here...
Post by: Machine Medic on February 06, 2014, 11:19:51 PM
Yeah old rods are usually absolutely terrible to weld with, because they tend to stick and freeze no matter how hot you get them...

And yes, MIG is about as easy as it gets.  It's literally a point-and-click interface.  If you can play Tremulous with any decency, you can run a MIG.   ;D

This is some of the SMAW I worked on earlier today:

It's not as pretty as a comparable TIG weld, but that's just the nature of stick welding:

You will know when you're stick welding correctly when you're laying a nice straight bead, and the arc itself is nice and tight - giving off a sweet hissing and crackling sound like it's literally burning.

Welding is just such fun, lol.   ;D

As for the project I'm working on, I'm going to be building a 24kW solid-state switch-mode power supply for experimental use... although I have absolutely no justification for making something capable of handling 24,000 watts (48,000 surge for 10 seconds  ::)) other than the fact that I love the brute force side of electric power, it's something I've wanted to do for a long time.

The design will be capable of outputting continuously variable voltage from 0-240VAC, or 0-350VDC at anywhere from 0 to 100 amps continuously... 200 momentarily for about 10 seconds.  It will have a manual (unregulated) control input for setting precise AC voltage, and an automatic (regulated) control input that *should* be able to regulate DC volts, as well as AC and DC amps.  The unit will have absolutely no transformers or computers inside of it, except for the main cooling blower, and a few of the self-contained SMPS units powering the controls.

This is about what it will look like when it's finished... there have been some minor changes since that sketch was made, but the aesthetics are almost the same.  All measurements are in feet and inches because 'Muricah.

It will use 10 of these mean little Fuji IGBT transistor modules to switch line voltage AC... each one of them has 6 individual transistors inside (wired in 3x2 parallel-series) that are rated for 100 amps at 600 volts each (adding up to a total of 300 amps at 1,200 volts across the positive and negative bus terminals).  I managed to find a bunch of them on E-bay for $13 each.   8)

Because these just happen to be three-phase transistor modules, I should be able to convert the unit to operate on three-phase power instead of standard North-American split-phase if I ever so desire.

And yes, this is going to cost me a lot in parts and aluminum... but this is a project that I have been looking forward to and saving for for some time now.

Since we're speaking of welding, this unit could probably pull off a few beads just for show if I found a suitable current-limiting device now that I think about it.  XD

Worked on a little miniature project today, chopping the windings off of an old, completely useless transformer for the core inside.

I'm going to attempt to build a saturable reactor (http://www.transformerssigma.com/magnetic-amplifiers-and-reactors.html) with the core once I finish cleaning it up.

Should be interesting, even if it doesn't work perfectly.  At least it's something to do while I wait for the metal to arrive for my main project.

I'm too lazy to read atm, so I just took a look at image. Machine Medic, it's this your job or just hobby? :)

This is part of a class I take at my high school.  Two hours to do pretty much whatever I want within reason, provided I pay for the materials I use.   :D

Since this thread has gotten so technical lately, I thought I'd post this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOESSCXGhFo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOESSCXGhFo)

ABB can do some pretty cool things if you throw enough money at them.   ;D

hehe i just been playing with IRB1400 on university last month, those things can do some serious damage :D .
Also a side story. My father used to work for ABB and he was pretty important guy there but he told them to kiss his ass and he opened his own company and he's doing well now. He told me that whole ABB environment sucks and he just couldn't stand that.

Screwing around with big trucks may be an American stereotype, but hey... Diesel power is amazing.  Especially when you see a Kenworth that can outpace a Corvette:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FhJTPV80vgo#t=2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FhJTPV80vgo#t=2)

Just a picture update of my 48kW power supply project.

Because reasons.
