If you were curious what is the best defense against energetic weapons, ask no more. It is a Bamboo.
Of course we don't recommend you to put on your bamboo t-shirt, when a neighbour with plasma gun is knocking on your door. You would need a mutated bamboo for that moment. The same kind that is used for the Bamboo, an alien structure of that name. Bamboo is an excellent reflect shield against all energetic weapons. In fact so excellent, that you cannot even scratch it with those, you will need non-energetic weaponry to take it down.
And because we are talking about Murnatan here, we put an option into your hands:
You can change server settings and let the Bamboo just deflect the attack (in a way, that has something to do with the magic of angles & mathematics), or to shoot back to the attacker.

On a serious note though, in my own experience, Alien defenses were generally weaker in 1.1 than Human defenses... but this was compensated by the fact that Aliens were much more mobile and generally more powerful. We'll see how this balances out.
