Title: Evolving.
Post by: grmg.pl on November 22, 2012, 12:08:40 PM
1. "Cannot evolve while wallwalking" - I see no reason for this other than engine limitations.
2. I'm in window room, next to OM and can't evo, because some dude is rifling an acid tube blocking the door :/. Maybe make it dependable on line of sight, proximity to OM/eggs etc or similar mechanics.
3. Any more details on the flying alien? Pls no bee-like models, this is really overused :D

1. This is not an engine limitation. I think that It is just not finished, so they denied it in T1, because it is causing problems.
2. This is good for gameplay - rushing humans have better chance. Anyway detecting anything through walls (to different rooms) is not best thing, but I don't know yet, how we will make it.
3. Attack with vampire biting, ability to gain very fast speed, wings can be damaged.

ability to gain very fast speed
That translates into open spaces.
That translates into Massdriver camp.
Unless you could evolve to "flying alien" and then to goon and higher. Or if goon is below "flying alien" than to AdvGoon.

exactly, how will you evolve as a tyrant on the wall?

It would look funny if you saw an alien doing that xD

It will be same like in air.

I wonder how many people will buy the game just because there was a real and working flying alien.

NS2 has a flying alien, and it's controls are...SMOOTH.
It's my fav alien :D

I would but i wanna know the cost and how the purchase is done?

1) do we donate? and show proof to admin
2) Do we buy it regularly and it automatically gives you the link and everything....

I think they forbid it cos of bug stucking in wall when doing that.

true i can imagine a lot of problems with that xD

Hey Rota, any luck with the "wall-walking boots"?  :D
(Although you got a ladder, so, close I guess)

3. Attack with vampire biting, ability to gain very fast speed, wings can be damaged.
Does this mean:
-Steals health by biting
-"Fast speed" >=2000 ups [My gpp marauder can achieve 2000 ups within ~5 seconds without walls, my normal dragoon can get to this in about 3 pounces/~2.5 seconds if i am allowed to use jump key as well]
-Fast Acceleration - like the KoRx spitfire flying alien?
-Below 20% health, or a sudden loss of 50% health or more results in loss of flying ability for 20 seconds?

There will be no such thing (atlest now). You have jetpack, ladder and engine to go into air.

4 - Below 20% health, or a sudden loss of 50% health or more results in loss of flying ability for 20 seconds?
1. Yes.
2. We cannot compare in game speed with something real yet and another thing is - it need be tested first. Not just give some number without testing in game. So now I can't tell you correct max speed.
3. Don't know acceleration from KoRx, but basically no. It will be slow acceleration. We will also try to implement gaining speed only while you flying down and losing while you flying up.
4. That is in KorX mod? You can fly if Overmind is up and if you have undamaged wings, regardless on your health.

1) If the OM is down, you can't fly, even though you have wings?

2) So you have a damaged right wing. Will you only be able to spiral down to the right, or just fall flat when you jump like any alien?

1) Correct.
2) Flat fall :)

2."I'm gonna crash!" *hits a wall, loses 1 hp, hops back on its feet, continues strafe jumping*
1.Hopefully something like stamina will be introduced [KoRx jetpack has a battery that works similar, it runs out faster without a reactor, but works without it still]

2. We cannot compare in game speed with something real yet and another thing is - it need be tested first. Not just give some number without testing in game. So now I can't tell you correct max speed.
Max speeds are easy to work out mathematically. Since this is "tremulous2" it will probably use g_speed of 320 as well, unless the engine will use a totally different speed system, which i think this is what you're talking about.
After finding out that g_speed value, we can look at the speed mod, where for example, human running speed modifier is (float) 1.0 therefore it runs at x1 speed of 320 = 320 qups.

ViruS:
Jetpack fuel will be turned off by default, but will be there like option.

About speed - I can say some predicted number, but it still need be tested in game, because it can be unplayable.

Some what-if things I think would be positive:

if in radius of OM:

1. Evolving should alway be possible, not being able to evolve inside your own base because there's human nearby feels unfair. Humans do not have this handicap.
Take window room on Niveus, if there's a human in the hallway you can't evolve easily, I think that's stupid.
Certainly when OM is being pulse rifled I should be able to evolve into at least a mara or something to fend off an attack.

2. Devolving should be possible when close to the OM. You will not regain evo points, hence you 'pay' for the devolution that way. Might consider a special effect to show the alien is in the process of devolving ... otherwise it might look a little bit silly haha.

1. If someone pulse rifling OM from close distance, then aliens already failed with defence. If you can evolve allways everywhere, humans will be mauled after any dretch spawn (dretch -> tyrant), game will be harder for humans and it will lose some tension. Yes, humans does not have this handicap, but they have another :)

2. Devolving will cut off some gameplay - if you need smaller alien, you need to die = feed humans = more action on human side, more atmosphere on alien side. If you can devolve, you just need to devolve = no feeding for humans, no action on human side, safety on alien side.

Basically these limitations making the game/atmosphere better.

There is always /kill.  The main reason why devolving is a bad idea is because if all eggs are down but the OM is up.  Any alien can still be a granger.  In bigger maps its already a giant wild goose chase for humans to finish the game, this feature would only add to that.

Also, people like me can play "pretty granger" by sitting on a human, and evolve to tyrant and crush em! <3

How bout something like this rather:

A delay for evolution. I hate to take ideas from other games, but NS2 turns you into an 'egg-like' thing [as seen on youtube, i'm not to sure] and waits x seconds before you can come out and move again as your new class.

/kill will still feed humans, if they did some damage to you before.

I don't know NS2 gameplay, but it must be quite different, because in tremulous you often don't have time to "incubate" in egg. It is fast action - spawn -> evolve -> kill (if it is needed).

No no, I'm not saying aliens should be able to evolve everywhere, I'm saying that it's possible there's no direct threat to the alien base and you're still not able to evolve inside of that base because there's something human nearby, is annoying.

So perhaps make it so that the "Unable to evolve" effect radius does not go through walls, that you can jump around a corner and evolve if needed.

Yes, that is a possibility. This could be done with PVS for a coarse pass.

+1 for wall aid. It might seem rediculous in some cases, since the quake engine [not sure about unreal] finds if a player is 'visable' by center points. A possible improvement is to make sure all parts of the bbox of the alien isn't visible to the human when it evolves so aliens can't like evolve behind a pole and charge with tyrant head-on.
