Ok, the jury made a decision:
Murnatan will be Unreal Engine 4 game.

That's a good news, right ?  :)

Here's why we think this is a good idea (besides the obvious).
Even if porting of all the source code, menus, maps, sounds, objects and so on from UDK (UE3) will take some time, we believe the work in UE4 will be faster, so there shouldn't be any major delay in development.

UE4 also offers acces to the source code and that simplifies a lot of problems. We can see how things work internally and therefore we can be more effective.

At last but not least, we don't like to stay with older systems, when it's not absolutely necessary.

So here we are. Now it's time to learn something new. But after all, isn't that what we do all the time ?

Do we (community) get access to the murnatan source later on, because then we can make mods n shit.
Previously it was stated it would be closed source meaning that no mods would exist but commandvariables would be available (which makes it not much differnet from a lot of fps games out there

Therefore, Tremulous 2 might have the future (or might not, since it isn't developed by a corporations, depends on what Global Government will decide), but Unvarnished doesn't.

No. It cannot be opensource because UE4 source access is not free and also is needed to pay charge from income.

What's the news on the closed Alpha?

Also, I don't suppose switching to UE4 changes the feasibility of any prospective Linux version?

Closed alpha was done - It had core gameplay (all weapons, all aliens, all buildings) and also some unfinished parts (mainly visual parts) - like for example just placeholders for buildings/weapons/aliens. We has also two basic but nice testing maps. Now we porting all it into UE4.

In latest news from UE4 developers is also big change: Linux support. It seems that Linux version will be possible at last. We still officially supportion only Win+Mac but I think that Linux will be later added too.

Out of curiosity, how much work is this porting process turning out to be?

Syntax changes?  Design changes?  Is any of your old code useable without making changes?

Prophet: All source code need to be rewrited. We can use our solutions from old code, but we need to write it in completely new style. Maps need to be recreated (we had only test maps, so we do not need to recreate them exactly same) and other assets need to be atleast reimported.
