Title: Unreal 3 Engine
Post by: Loki on November 20, 2012, 10:34:54 AM
Since I've played Dishonored, Blacklight: Retribution and such games using U3 Engine I saw big graphic problem. Texture loading. I heard it's because of bottleneck of graphic card but that's nonsense since GTX series cards have such problem.
Is it because of engine or because of game developers, fking up textures?

What is wrong with texture loading?

The textures are loading very slowly, when I look at some places, texture is like 32x32 and then it loads again back to 512x512. Also Rage engine has same issues but it uses idtech engine 5.

They maybe upscaling textures, but I don't know, I never played that games.

It's the MIP maps loading. Every texture is saved with more smaller prescaled versions to avoid realtime resampling artifacts. It just loads smaller MIPs first. If the texture is streamed, it'll load during gameplay when it's needed. Game developer has no possibility to affect the loading time.
What can be changed is the time when the textures starts loading.

I'd rather be in the game quicker than wait ~2 minutes for all models to load.

Depends on the game quality :)
If its an awesome game, i am eager to wait 2 minutes every game to load.

But it also depends on your computer ofcourse :)

If it must do this as well, then so be it. If all I want to do is talk or half-watch, then all graphics don't need to be loaded yet.
Could this be an option to choose in settings, as to whether progressively load textures or wait for them all to load at once?

We do not plan to implement progressive loading. It is not good for this type of game, because it can cause lags to you.

Lancer read properly please. I didn't mean game/level/map loading.

But texture loading doesn't have almost any connection with internet.

well then idk what the problem is. But it's not my mac for sure :) I take care of my mac.

1) I walk it to school
2) I sleep with it (Not really)
3) I give it a bath
4) I feed it oatmeal

so nothing wrong with my mac.

A sloppy limerick:

I have a baby too
Buts it's not quite as new
As your well-kept computer must be. >_>
It dual-boots Linux
And it might be hard to fix
When I feed it my lunch just like you.
