Title: VOIP? Clan support? Clan rankings?
Post by: |AoD|Bloop on December 13, 2012, 04:56:56 PM
Veteran player here. I loved Tremulous more than Yarou loved curry. IMO, 1.2 broke Tremulous. Is 2 going to be like the new version or the old version that everyone loved?

Tremulous 2 will be based on 1.1 gameplay (we love it too).

VOIP - in game will be voice chat.

Clan support - yes, no more adding tags into your nick.

Clan rankings - no. But if you have some ideas how it should work, tell us.

I would definitely like to see a clan ranking system.  Competitive play is what really makes or breaks a game for me.

philipineans  ;D

but anyway why voip in game? well in public servers it'd be useful but in CWs there's better option like teamspeak or mumble... so idk it just doesn't have to be there I guess... (look noobish cs1.6 public servers)

Or just a divided option?

Public VoiP
War VoiP (Settings: 3v3 / 4v4 / 5v5 etc) - No other people allowed (Spectators who will tell what the others are doing).

Clan rankings could be done through a tournament which would be held by only by the most reliable people since people who have tried setting up a tournament have failed because of bad organisation e.g. TISC tournament.

OR (just a suggestion)

Have a couple of dedicated servers which would only be used in scrims and wins/losses and draws would be recorded somewhere, maybe see-able in forums aswell. I don't actually know if it's possible or not.

Alternative:

Just do it normally, scrim in a server, screenshots and demos provided. results recorded in some sort of clan ranking chart.

actually VOIP is just making server less responsible, also quality of voice would sux... I think there will be no many ppl who will use voip
it's just my practical opinion

I was played CW only once, so I don't know, how CW exactly work with all things aroud. That is reason, why we have not planned much about CW, only tag management etc.

But it is quite popular, so this game should have something that will support CW. It will probably need to run server in CW mode with different settings and rules and with ranking on the website. Some social features would be good too. It looks like lot of work and I cannot promise, that we will start working on it before release. But I would like to plan it for future.

I'd make a default "Direct communication" like in Arma 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L3yMeKzpPI (the beginning) and then a "side/team communication", that would be possible let's say on stage 2 by building a radio satellite or something like that for humans and some weird crap for aliens :D.

lol trying to communicate with aliens? or you mean walkie-talkies :P

No, between the team only. The direct communication is like in real life when you talk with your classmate at school. The walkie talkies could be bought however, but I think nobody would really buy it, so it'd be better if you had it instantly after building the specific building.

Easy:
Make a Tremstats-like webpage for the scrim server, but supports tags. #American tag and #European tag, and adds total score of all players in each tag. Winning tag gets granger cookie?

I just still don't think it's useful idea, kids play mostly and I don't think they'll say something :P
...or if it will exist, we'd all hear angry german kid :DDDDDDD that would be the only + for me.

Firstly, sorry for the massive necro. I wasn't sure if to make my own post but a lot of the points brought up here are relevant to my questions/discussion.

Is there still support for separate clan tags (meaning not adding them in your nick) like you once stated.

In-game VOIP is pretty useful for team communication in pub gameplay although I think most clans would use third party programs like Discord/TS3. It depends how team orientated you want the game to be. If victory is determined by those who cooperate the most then in-game VOIP is essential. Nobody wants to stand and type to explain to their team and it can often be seen as flaming. Games like League of Legends get a lot of flak for not adding this feature.

You said there would be no clan rankings, is that still the case? Competitive games are attracting more attention over the non competitive games and this is likely due to the popularity of streaming platforms such as Twitch. I think some sort of clan or player leaderboards/rankings and a Murnantan hosted Twitch group would really help boost the competitive scene and provide some free advertisement.

Additionally I would love to see some early hosted tournaments. In recent games I've seen that this really keeps the attention of current followers and pulls in potential new ones.

I bet my buttons that clan support (since Tremulous was popular mainly because of clans) is implemented there, such as adding tags. I hope these tags will also be limited, for example you register a clan with a tag and then there will be no imposters faking both the membership and name, as it happened in the 1.1 version. The only way to discover him was of course via extended playerlist...

EDIT: I kind of changed my opinion, VOIP would be a smart choice for a public server indeed, also it could work well between two clanleaders so they don't have to write things.

VOIP is planned, but first we will test voice over Steam - maybe that will be enough.

Clan ranking would be easy to implement when we will have connected game with website administration and stats. I think I have to change my opinion and support that clan ranking.

For tournaments I think we need bigger community first. I am not sure if we will host such things. I rather motivate players by rewards for playing time as individual or as a whole clan.

As far as the tournaments you mentioned Ckit, I've been toying with the idea of Contra hosting some kind of annual open in the future.  However, this is merely just an idea at this point...  I'm not sure if the other leaders would be in favor of such a thing, or whether a few people working day jobs could even manage such a large event.  It might be something that we would have to organize with the help of a special committee or our scrim team after we've had some good recruitment going for a good while.

Like Rotacak said, we all need bigger communities first before anything on that scale can be decided for sure.

We'd definitely like to try some more casual and fun seasonal events though, like annual granger races and holiday parties.

Definitely be thinking about the competitive side of things.  I'd love to see a legitimate esport grow around the game but it requires developer support.  It won't just crop up on its own.  It is not needed on release, better to focus on a quality product first.  But if the game should trend on steam, move quickly.

Indeed, let's see how it turns out. But have something prepared in reserve, just in case :D

Thanks for you responses.

I agree that a sizeable player base should be instituted prior to setting up tournaments. Although, planning ahead with some ideas like MachineMedic mentioned is always nice to see.
